Yes, you can add UTM tracking parameters to your quiz URL to enhance the tracking and analysis of your quiz traffic sources. UTMs are snippets that you can add at the end of your URL to help you organize your reporting and analytics that is tracked through services like Google Analytics and more.
This feature can be enabled from the Results Page under the URLs drop-down menu.
How to Add UTM Tracking Parameters
1. Enable URL Tracking
Navigate to the Results Page of your quiz and access the URLs drop-down menu to enable URL tracking parameters.
2. Set Parameters and UTM types
You can add any URL tracking parameters using the format:
utm_[UTM type]=[UTM value]
There are a number of UTM types that you can use in tracking for various properties and they follow the same pattern and wording for the UTM type such that they can be identified correctly by the traffic platform, those being:
utm_campaign
Used to identify the name of your campaign which in this case could be your quiz name.
utm_medium
Used to identify a specific medium where traffic could be coming from, for example if you have a version of a quiz in French and one in English you may set up a specific name to differentiate between the 2.
utm_source
Used to identify a specific source for the visit which could be set for different versions of the quiz that such as a version that you use in paid marketing from different platforms such as Facebook ads or Blogs etc.
utm_term
It can be used as a campaign term for keyword related PPC activities depending on your current set-up
utm_content
It can be used to identify how different placements can drive traffic. For example you ca have different copies of the quiz for each type of placement in which you can use this UTM to differentiate between a pop-up quiz, embedded quiz or buttons at different placements in your store.
For example to track views from a specific quiz you can use the campaign UTM that uses the name of your quiz as a UTM value:
utm_campaign=find-my-perfect-pet-food
Pro Tip!
If you want to use the value that represents the actual slug of your quiz you can use as a value for the UTM parameter {slug} like so:
utm_campaign={slug}
3. Multiple Parameters
If you need to add multiple parameters, separate them with the sign & . For example, to track visits from a specific quiz, you might use the following 2 UTMs combined to give you the source of the visit as coming from Lantern and the campaign to be path of your specific quiz:
utm_source=lantern&utm_campaign=find-my-perfect-pet-food
Built-in Parameters
Historically, Lantern provided two built-in tracking parameters:
- utm_source: Originally set to ‘Lantern’
- utm_campaign: Also set to ‘Lantern’
These parameters are still available and can be customized to better align with your tracking needs.
By utilizing UTM parameters, you can gain detailed insights into the effectiveness of various marketing campaigns and traffic sources leading to your quiz.
